Our Reception pupils have made a fantastic start to their time at Rykneld Primary School and had lots of wonderful experiences.
The Three Billy Goats Gruff role play.
The children have been on Autumn walks and looked at the leaves. They found lots of different colours.
Build A Bear Workshop
All the children in Reception visited the Build a Bear Workshop to learn how they make their bears and to make a class mascot. Here is RS with their bear. They have called him Murphy after the author Jill Murphy.
We were very lucky to have a special visitor come in to talk to us about keeping safe in and around the water. Andy, a volunteer for the RNLI, talked to the children about how the volunteers help people. We looked at the different people that the RNLI help and thought about how we would feel if we were in those situations.
We had the opportunity to look at videos of lots of different boats and jet skis. We learnt that life boats are orange, so that the boats are easy to see. We also found out that when lifeboats get flipped upside down in the water, they can turn themselves back the right way so that they don't sink. The children were particularly impressed by the B class boats that can get close to the rocks!
We learnt about the different flags that you might spot on the beach.
** Red and yellow flag- safe to swim between the flags
** Black and white flag- only surf boards or canoes
** Red flag- do not swim
We talked about how to keep safe in and around water-
S- Spot the dangers
A- take Advice (follow the safety signs/ flags)
F- go with a Friend or Family member
E- learn what to do in an Emergency
We found out that the RNLI give up their time for free, but they all have other jobs. They volunteer to keep people safe. We then had the chance to get dressed up and try on some clothes, life jackets and helmets! What a fun morning!
A trip to Morrisons
Reception children walked to Morrison's to buy ingredients to bake Gingerbread People. They learnt about how to keep themselves safe, including the danger of strangers and how to cross roads safely. All the children walked in pairs along the pavement, holding hands to keep their friends safe, keeping a safe distance from the edge of the road.
At Morrison's they loved looking for the number of each aisle to find the ingredients from the recipe. They took it in turns to hold the basket, collect the ingredients, put the food on the conveyer belt at the till and pack the bags.
Reception have been cooking with their parents this half term. The children had a fantastic time finding the correct ingredients, weighing them and making the dough for the Gingerbread People. They all took turns mixing, rolling and cutting the dough. They learnt about the danger of hot ovens and the importance of being safe around them.
